In my 18 years as a member of Harmony, Incorporated, I believe that I’ve committed myself to being a contributing member to our organization both on and off the risers.
I have held many Board and committee positions within our chapter, and had the privilege of being AC&C co-chair twice as well as chapter show chair/ co-chair. In 2009-2010, I sat on the Area 1 Team as PR coordinator and previous to that, on the Board of Directors for Harmony Homecoming.
My time is magically divided between my family (hubby and two wonderful kids, plus of course the extended family!), my work (32 years in a health care facility) and my many other interests. My passion for learning and teaching has been developed and challenged over the past 10 years while being a preceptor and member of the Clinical Education committee for Health Sciences at Dalhousie University.
I am very active within my church and last year celebrated my 20th year team-leading a children’s choir. I have a special interest in working with individuals with special needs and currently volunteer with Special Olympics.
My interests are great, my commitments are strong but my passion is people and how we work together to make the day, the week, the year – a better one. Harmony, Incorporate has already made me a better, stronger person- I’m looking forward to passing that on through my activities as Area 1 Director!
I have been a member of Harmony, Inc. and the Elm City Echoes since 1989. Sing tenor and have been fortunate to sing with Harmony friends in the Elm City Echoes, The Eighth Notes Octet, Yours Truly, Sound Reflection and currently The Quartet Notes quartet. I have been privileged to have served on the International Board of Harmony, Inc. for approximately three years and then as Executive Secretary for seventeen years. I am currently serving as International Parliamentarian. Love Harmony, the music and the wonderful friendships I share. Pleased now to serve as your Area 1 Secretary/Treasurer.
Mary began Barbershop singing with the Kingston Sweet Adelines over 30 years ago. In Harmony Inc., she sang with the ScotianAires, the Capital Chordettes (International Champions) and the Abegweit Chimes. Her quartet experience includes Chasing Rainbows (two time Area 2 Quartet Champs, International Novice Quartet Award winners and International Quartet Finalists for many years) and most recently Ovation (Area 1 Quartet Champs in 2009 and 8th place International Finalists in 2010).
Mary served as a Singing Judge for many years and held positions on the Contest & Judging Committee, such as Training Coordinator and Singing Category Director. She proudly served on a LABBS contest panel in Harrogate, England. While judging was fun and gave her a unique opportunity to learn; her favourite thing is to teach and coach. She has instructed at Area workshops, served as a member of the HITS faculty and coached Choruses and Quartets throughout North America.
Mary is excited to be encouraging education throughout Area 1 in her new role on the Team.
Deborah started barbershopping with the Elm City Echoes in 2000 after hearing them sing at a local mall. She was bitten by the quartet bug and competed with 4 Crying Out Loud in 2003. Classi-gal Music was next from 2004 – 2009 and although they aren’t competing anymore they still meet weekly and sing where ever they can. She presently competes with Meadowlarks and they have our sights on IC&C in Floridaa for 2012….Mickey Mouse here they come!!!
Deborah says “I have never enjoyed myself more than with our Harmony Chapters at AC&C and IC&C….time to give back some of the joy!!! I have loved serving as your Area1 Quartet Promotions Co-ordinator since 2010. Many, many thanks to the A-1 Team and all you keeners out there who have made my job so much fun and so stress free. YOU ROCK!!!!”
As a parent, foster parent and school bus driver, Joanne is very involved with young people and has a passion to encourage and enhance their lives. She admires everything about young people and says that they are our future leaders, doctors, lawyers, parents, EVERYTHING!
Joanne is also a horse enthusiast and has ridden for 40 years! She and her husband have 7 horses that they enjoy every day and take to local shows. The horses are Joanne’s summer love.
She has a wonderful supportive husband who encourages her to do anything she wants to do. She also has a 27 year old son Josh, married to his high school sweeheart Amy and together they have given Joanne the joy of 2 beautiful grandsons Cameron 2 and Dylan 10 months. Joanne’s 23 year old daughter and best friend Emily is a mini Joanne and they share many of the same thoughts and emotions. Joanne says she is a very lucky woman who has found love and friendship with the Elm City Echoes and in the best hobby in the world, Barbershop singing.
I was introduced to this wonderful style of singing in 1979, when I moved to Campbellton from Dartmouth. The first week I was there, a neighbour invited me to a Membership Night. I hadn’t even heard of barbershop singing by ladies but thought it would be a great opportunity to meet some new people. Needless to say, I was hooked! I was a member of the Chaleur Echoes until 1984, when my family moved to Calgary. We moved back to the Maritimes, Saint John, in 1985 and I sought out and joined the Sea Belles. I have been a member of the Sea Belles for approximately 17 years now in total, having moved to Europe for a few years but as they say, you always come back.
My barbershop experience has given me much personal growth, having held various chairs including costume committee, choreographer, public relations/publicity, secretary and sergeant-at-arms. Best of all, I have made many lifelong friends.
